Sam, from Wiltshire, sent in this great idea. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
Having recently read the story, ‘Pirates love Underpants,’ I decided to set up a book related play that was inspired by it. This weaving activity is so simple!
What you will need:
Cardboard…and that’s it!
What to do:
Cut out a pant shape (although can be any shape!) and make 1cm snips on two opposing sides, 1cm width apart. Tie string/wool etc in each snip.
How to weave:
Teach you little ones to go over and under using different threads. You could even try natural materials such as leaves and flowers!
This activity was very calming for the children and required a great deal of concentration. It is an activity that really helps with fine motor and hand eye coordination.
Some children found the concept of going over and under more difficult to comprehend but I just reinforced ‘over and under.’
Do you have any other projects planned?
My next project idea will be something nature inspired and the outdoors.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
I’m a first time mum to a little boy who is one years old. I live in Wiltshire, England where I work as a teacher but I haven’t long returned from maternity leave. I have taught children from 4-11 years but Early Years Education will always be my passion.
My instagram is @play2learnwithharry
How are you finding being housebound so far?
I was initially disappointed to be spending the last few months of my maternity leave at home without being able to attend baby classes and meet my mummy friends.
However, I have thoroughly enjoyed having the extra time at home with my son as since I have returned to work, I have been on a rota system so in school for less days.
I find being outdoors and going for dog walks have really helped us get through lockdown.
Do you have any tips for other parents?
Go for walks! Fresh air always helps your mindset and well being.
Don’t feel guilty for not being the perfect mum in lockdown. It’s hard juggling home life and especially if you are also trying to work from home too.
Has this website and community helped you?
I think it’s great to have such wonderful ideas all in one place
