Natalie from Wrexham, in the United Kingdom, is joining in with the 75 Year VE day celebrations today in spectacular fashion – by making this cardboard aeroplane and having a party with cupcakes. Well, it wouldn’t be a party without cake, would it?!

What did you do?

The aeroplane was made out of cardboard that I’ve had deliveries in.

Things we used…

  • paint
  • felt tips
  • paper
  • a printer
  • a laminator
  • a glue gun
  • scissors
  • cardboard
  • string

Instructions:

  1. We used a glue gun and stuck the smaller box onto the front of the big box.
  2. We then used scissors to cut a hole in the top.
  3. We then used the scissors to cut 3 strips of cardboard to be used for the propeller.
  4. We secured this with a small bolt so it can actually turn.
  5. The steering wheel, we cut out of cardboard and used a wooden dowel and glue gunned it to the box so this turns as well.
  6. We drew the British flags on the wings and then painted it!
  7. The bunting was printouts from a colouring page, coloured them, then I used the laminator on each piece.
  8. Found some string in the house and put them all on!
  9. The window pictures were all done with paint, copying pictures off google.

Tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Natalie Evans. I am 31 years old, from Wrexham, North Wales. I have 3 kids: Miah 7 years old, Max 5 years old & Seth 2 years old.

How are you finding being housebound with kids?

It feels like we’ve been in lockdown for ages, but then I think it’s May already, that’s gone fast! I’ve found it ok so far, a bit hard juggling 3 kids (one who is non-verbal autistic) as they all have different needs.

I feel like we are coping. My view on homeschooling is that it should be fun! Kids learn through play and they don’t realise they are learning. The kids’ mental health for me is far more important. Luckily we’ve done so much these last 6 weeks that the mood in the house is still a good one! That’s how I’m hoping it stays.

Has the community helped?

I’ve had loads of ideas from the Housebound with Kids Facebook group and, truthfully, it’s helped us through this lockdown as the ideas still keep coming. I’m loving seeing everyone’s creations and adapting them to do in my house! It’s kept us busy so far for 6 weeks! Thank you, everyone!
