Bev, from Wales, UK, sent in this great idea. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
Daddy ordered a new office chair (as the office is Still closed) and so we had an empty cardboard box.
Edward is 4 and loves dressing up. His Dressing-up clothes are always strewn all over his floor, So we saw this as an opportunity. I wanted something that would encourage Edward to want to put his clothes in it, (so it had to be Toy Story, or a dinosaur, but I wasn’t sure where to start turning a box into a dinosaur wardrobe!)
First we cut the doors, then found an old pole and cut small holes in the side of the box to use for the rail. We then covered the box with white paper. Edward really enjoyed painting it. We then printed out some clouds and stuck them on too.
Edward wanted both Buzz and Woody on the doors, so we made them a door each. He actually put all of his dressing up clothes away himself without prompt before he went to bed.
It seemed to work by covering the box in white paper before painting it.
The doors were not painted, but just coloured card and paper cut out and stuck on. Edward isn’t the most patient when it comes to detail. It was easier to stick the bits on.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
I’m Bev. I have 3 children. Edward is 4, Henry is 14 (and is working from home as schools are still closed.) Oliver is 22 (He’s a student who is also home from University and is also working from home.) Home is Wales, in the UK.
How are you finding being housebound so far?
I love it.
As my husband usually works away midweek and my eldest son is usually away too at University, it’s great having all the family at home.
Do you have any tips for other parents?
I don’t follow a homeschool timetable, most of what we do (with Edward Age 4) is quite relaxed. I suppose we follow child led learning. Some days we have productive homeschool days, and other days, we don’t get much done at all. I feel that when young children are spending time with you, they are learning all the time. I don’t beat myself up about not doing ‘schoolwork’ every day! Cooking, cleaning, chatting, reading and singing are more than enough.
Has being part of our community helped you?
It’s great to see a forum to share ideas.
