In between helping to keep the HWK community a supportive place for all (she is a super moderator in the group), Nikki from North Wales made these fantastic stick-hearts. Let’s see how she did it…
Please tell us about what you did…
To make this beautiful little creation we first went down to the woods and collected lots and lots of different sized sticks.
We then cut out a heart shape from an old cardboard box (our first heart we made quite large, but then we made lots of smaller ones for family and friends using the cut out as a stencil for the rest).
We then got out our trusty glue gun and glue stick (you will get through quite a lot so make sure you have enough) and a pair of scissors/secateurs .
The border was the first part we stuck down (although on some smaller ones we went borderless and they still looked fantastic). I let my daughter work out how and where to fit the sticks in and I was there to do the sticking down. If you haven’t used a glue gun before I advise not to let young children do that part as it gets very hot.
Once we had completed the heart we went outside and sprayed it (this is where you can get a bit more creative). My daughter decided on gold and it looks gorgeous. For our family and friends we did some gold and some white.
We are also planning on a rainbow version next.
If I can inspire Mrs Hinch to do one then I can definitely inspire you guys!
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I have two children Willow, aged 5, and Seb who is about to turn 1.
Once you have all your sticks the craft itself doesn’t take long at all and we managed to complete ours during Seb’s nap time. It allowed Willow to get some 1-2-1 attention from me and she had so much fun doing it (hence making extras afterwards).
Apart from not being able to see family and friends, we are enjoying being home together. We have our days where it can get a bit tough, especially if the baby hasn’t slept very well, meaning mummy hasn’t slept very well. But on those days, we quite often chill out with a film or two and have a well deserved down day.
Do you have any tips for other parents in the same situation?
I don’t really have any tips other than: don’t put too much pressure on yourself to home school. Take this time to enjoy them, teach them about the woods, about making chocolate cake and licking the bowl, let them paint with their hands and make a messy masterpiece and watch their face as you stick it on the wall. Just let them be little.
I am very much a crafter at heart and proud to be a member of Housebound with kids on Facebook. I absolutely love seeing all the creativity and all your happy children proud as punch showing us what you’ve been up to.
Hope you enjoy doing this craft as much as we did, please share your creations.
