Cherie, from Uk, gave her staircase a new lease of life with this revamp. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
So my stairs have been a horrible mess since we moved in. With money tight and everyone busy there was no time to concider repairing them. Then lock down happened and I started searching for stair repair ideas, mainly on Pinterest.
Made the decision to try to repair the existing stairs instead of replacing whole stairs but they were very creaky and loud so was unsure if it would work.
Did a lot of research about painting stairs, do’s and don’ts.
Started by trying to fix the creaks, read online if you nail the treads down again it will help which it did tremendously.
After the noise was reduced dramatically I had to fill all holes and gaps before painting (there were lots of holes from previous repairs).
Once everything was dry I checked the holes as some had sunk and needed re-filling.
Then sand everything down and wipe with damp cloth to get rid of all residue before painting.
I started with white primer all over then two coats of white satin on all the edges, I knew the middle was going to be a lot darker so didn’t need the white.
Then once dry tape up your lines. I measured the centre then worked outwards and drew dots all the way up the stairs to line the tape up to. This is worth taking the time to do as accurate as possible as the second tape up I worked from the first lines. Make sure the frog tape is pushed down firmly on all edges so you get as little bleeds as possible.
Then when your happy with the lines, paint away. I used a small sponge roller for most and a brush for any tight locations. I let first coat dry then after the second coat while paint is still wet remove the tape (most satisfying part of the whole thing).
Wait for this to be fully dry as the next tape will be covering the new paint. I then did exactly the same with the markings up the stairs then matched the tape to the markings, then two coats and remove the tape again.
I needed to make small touch-ups with both while and blue with a fine brush, then coated with a durable finishing seal.
I found out the best way to get your measurements was to measure the width of one step then half it and that should be the width of the centre colour. Due to adding lines either side I lessened the first measurement and used 1inch gap then 1inch line.
Do you have any other projects planned?
Next is to tile the kitchen, we have been slowly decorating every room in the house ourselves since we moved 2 years ago. Kitchen has been done just the tiles left to do.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
My name is Cherie. I live in the UK and have my two-year-old little boy with my partner.
How are you finding being housebound so far?
Lock down has been a blessing in the sense that we would have never been able to get as much done around the house in such a short period of time. My partner redesigned our whole back garden so it was easier and safer for the boys to play. However, having a child by your side constantly can be so very draining and demanding.
Do you have any tips for other parents?
Just don’t feel guilty about not doing activities every day. When my boy has been bored he has had to use his imagination to create fun which is a great way to learn.
Has this website and community helped you?
Great idea for inspiration for all families.
