Ruth, from Leeds, sent in this great sensory activity idea. Read on…
What did you do?
This sensory activity was aimed for my 17-month-old as he is showing interest in lots of animal books recently, this being one of them.
He thoroughly enjoyed all the different materials and explored how they transferred from one place to another. This scoop and fill tray is an absolute favourite of ours.
Some of the play was edible and some wasn’t however he is incredibly wise at sussing out which bits he can eat as he very used to this sort of play.
*Supervision needed if little ones still place things in mouth or use edible ingredients only.
Do you have any other projects planned?
I’m thinking a sensory farm using toilet roll characters and rice to pour in as he loves singing Old McDonald with mummy and his big brother!
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
My name is Ruth and I have my own Instagram page called @miniplay2learn which originally started as a way to keep busy with my two boys during lockdown. I can’t believe the followers I’ve gained which is amazing as people share so many great ideas. I love anything DIY and resources that help my children to learn. My eldest is 4 and about to start school in September so we have been very busy with learning activities, preparing him for starting September so feel free to give my page a visit if it is something you are interested in.
How are you finding being housebound so far?
You know what? I’ve really enjoyed it. I missed so much at the beginning but as time went on I realised how quickly my children adapted to their new way of life so I took the opportunity to spend time with them and looking back, what a journey it’s been. It has felt like an extended maternity!
Do you have any tips for other parents?
I’m a teacher so I find learning activities come naturally to me.. but as I say to all my friends.. ‘little and often.’ Learning for little ones should be based around play and those nature walks teach them life skills that are so important. However, if you are wanting to support children in phonics and number at home, make sure it is full of fun and laughter!
