Mary, from Ireland, shows us how to make rice glitter!
What did you do?
I made peppergrinder rice (alternative glitter)
To dye the rice:
Put some dried rice in a ziplock bag with a little vinegar and a few drops of food colouring and shake it all up.
Then place on a baking tray and leave to dry completely.
To make the ‘glitter’:
We put some different colours of rice in a Peppergrinder (I bought this one on wish, very cheap) and ground them up. You can add it to a glitter shaker, it should have a really long shelf life.
My 4 year old was able to manage on her own but my 2 year old needed me to hold it steady.
I had cut out different lollypop shapes on two pieces of card and glued the together with a reused lolly stick.
Then the kids added glue and the ground up rice. (they dried pretty quickly).
We also made a card for Dad and we turned two of the lollipops into Grandfather cards.
Lovely alternative to glitter! Better for the environment (and makes slightly less of a mess)the kids loved sprinkling it on.
This activity worked really well and the kids really enjoyed making the ‘Glitter’
The Peppergrinder wouldn’t grinder up ‘boil in the bag’ rice.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
My name is Mary. I live in Ireland with my husband 3 kids, 4 year old girl, 2 year old boy and 4 month old boy. I am currently on maternity leave from my job as early years educator. Which I have been working at for over 10 years. I have always loved to create activities for kids and I try to find and reuse items I already have. I started my instagram account @busylittlebs 6 weeks and we have been having lots of fun.
How are you finding being housebound so far?
Its not easy being stuck in the house with 3 young kids. But in a way I am kind of lucky, my baby was only 4 weeks old when the lockdown started so I was already prepared to be somewhat restricted to the house more. My husband also started a new job while in the middle of the lockdown and he has been working from home which is great.
Do you have any tips for other parents?
If you can at all get outside even for 10 minutes or to take a drive, it makes a huge difference to everyones day. If you can’t get out even a change of scenery can help. like setting up an activity somewhere they dont normally play, like a hallway, porch or even a low window ledge.
Has this website and community helped you?
It’s a great hub for ideas for kids activities and even ones for adults too.
