What did you do?
For this activity I used pasta in three different colours but you could use Lego, or other different material. I wrote the words ones, tens and hundreds then 1’s, 10’s and 100’s. Each of these was written in a colour that corresponded to a bowl full of the same coloured pasta. I initially demonstrated using a number e.g the number 236. I would put 2 orange pasta into the hundred’s bowl, 3 red pasta into ten’s bowl and 6 green pasta in the one’s bowl. I divided the number up into columns to explain it to my 6 year old.
It took a little bit of explaining but my son did get it and once he did he found it very engaging and enjoyable and we would definitely do this activity again. Definitely good for tactile learning. You need 6 different bowls for this activity or more if doing thousands too.
