Sian, from Worthing, in the UK, sent in this great pine cone painting idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

On one of our many walks F and I came across fallen pine cones, so we brought a huge pile back activities.

We have been doing lots of process art recently and I want to show F that you can make beautiful art with many different media and materials. Painting with everyday objects its such fun and one of my favorite ways of exploring process art with little ones.

Using tools other than paintbrushes sparks curiosity, creativity and the ability to think outside the box. The point of this is to see how the tools with work withe colours and different paint and media types.

Its great to ask kids what do you think will happen if we use this object instead of a paintbrush, so I grabbed a few pine cones and we had some great fun.

I got the lid from a cardboard box and placed some paper inside, now add blobs of different colour paint onto the middle of your paper. We chose red (my favouite colour) , Orange (F’s favourite colour) and Yellow (because its summery).

Add your pinecones and invite your child to come and paint – gently roll the pinecones in all directions. be careful , don’t let them fall out of the box, I would put a messy mat underneath just in case.

Keep the activity child led, don’t ask them to paint anything specific just let them use their creativity and carry on until they decide they have finished.

Let the art dry and you could even make your own gift tags or cards using handmade art.

There really isn’t a right or wrong way to do this, you can’t go wrong. Just let your child unleash their creativity.

Do you have any other projects planned?

We have lots of ideas, but the top ones are: 1. Pendulum painting 2. Salad Spinner Painting.

@creativity_train

How are you finding being housebound so far?

I am really enjoying the quality time we have together and the fun creative activities.

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Don’t be too hard on yourself, go with the flow. If you can create little activities for play with the kids then it helps to give them routine and focus, which will help you feel more relaxed.

Has this website and community helped you?

I love it, such a great idea and I love the fact it caters for kids of all ages.
