Jenna, from the UK, had fun making bird feeders with pine cones. Let’s take a look…
What did you do?
On one of our walks, we found an abundance of pine cones! We collected all the big pine cones and headed home.
I provided everything that the children needed to make them: a jar of peanut butter, spoons, birds seed and a few recycled containers.
Firstly the children spooned on lots of peanut butter, enough to cover the majority of the pine cone. Then using their hands they could scoop up the seeds and press them into the peanut butter. We placed them around our garden on the floor but if you had a tree, you could hang them up by wrapping a little string around.
Due to COVID restrictions on educational settings for example resources needing to be easily cleaned, pine cones can’t really be incorporated into our loose parts play currently. So we thought we could make bird feeders with them! This way the children get to take them home, recycle them and provide something that will benefit the wildlife around us.
This activity was great as it enabled them to independently create their own bird feeder. They were able to do this with little to no support once we talked through how to do it.

Do you have any tips for other parents?
Don’t put too much pressure on yourself, some days you’ll find are easier than other so just go with the flow! And if it doesnt work, that’s ok!
