Emma, from the UK, sent in this great heart suncatcher idea. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
We love nature play in our house so when these rose petals started to fall from our bush I knew just how I wanted to use them.
You will need:
Cardboard
Sticky back plastic/contact paper
Petals or any collage materials
To set up:
– I used an old cereal box to make the cardboard heart outline. You could do this activity without the cardboard but younger children will be much more successful with a template.
– Attach the sticky plastic to the cardboard.
– Pop petals/collage materials in a pot so that your child(ren) can access them.
My daughter was about 1 and a half when we did this and she did it independently. How many activities with a one year old give you a chance to sit down and have a rest? Simple set ups that make little ones feel successful are my favourite. I also like that this activity can be adapted for different themes and different age groups. Younger babies can definitely have a go too, especially if they are just starting to pull themselves up – this would be a great way to encourage it.
Do you have any other projects planned?
There is ALWAYS something on my to do list. I tend to have a few ideas at a time and go with whatever my little girl fancies next.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
I’m Emma. Mum to a nearly two year old. Before I had my daughter I was a Primary School Teacher. I do much less of that now and spend my days enjoying being a Mummy. I also teach children’s exercise classes and run a play Instagram account sharing different ideas each day. I don’t have much chance to get bored!

Do you have any tips for other parents?
Just relax and breathe. We are all doing the best we can!
What are your children’s favourite books?
My all time favourite is ‘Owl Babies‘ as I have such special memories of being read that by my Mum.
What toys would you recommend to other parents?
It really does depend on an individual child’s age, stage and interests. Please don’t feel pressured to buy your child particular toys to help their learning. You as their adult are one of the best resources they’ll ever need – just play with them!
Has this website and community helped you?
It is so nice to inspire and be inspired. It’s created a really lovely community!
