Looking for party themes, what about a rainbow birthday party?! Read on for some lovely rainbow themed birthday party ideas.
Thanks to Geni for sending in this great party idea. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
We had a fantastic rainbow birthday party for our little one.
Window Display: We created a window display. To make your own you would need colour paper or tissue paper to make paper chains, a flip chart or a large size of white paper, like A3, for the clouds, ruler, scissors and cellotape.
Balloon Display:
We also made a balloon display. To make your own use multi-coloured balloons and white ones too if opting to make clouds too. I also used some silver and gold ones. To hold it all together we used cellotape.
Cake: For the cake, I followed a very easy and very popular Spanish recipe, using yoghurt, olive oil and orange/lemon zest and it’s juice to make the sponge. There are a few easy recipes online for this in English, but I just follow my mum’s.
She uses the recipient of the yoghurt to measure flour, sugar, oil… In this case, as it was for my baby, I wanted a healthier option so he could have as much, so I replaced the sugar for honey. It was then decorated with fresh whipped cream and different fruits.
To top it up, I rummaged in what we call, ‘the party box’, and used left overs from previous parties: tablecloth, bunting, banners, disco light, candles, party bags… Anything colorful!
We even sent party bags to the cousins ( filled with some sweets, party hats, bubbles and balloons) and some cake, which we all loved. None left by the end of the day!
My kids loved the hands on making some of the decorating, helping out with the cake and cutting the paper strips and linking them to make the paper chain rainbow. As a child, I was obsessed with paper chains, so it was quite heartwarming to see the kids being engaged for a good few hours doing these.
The boys wore stripy tops that I happen to get in the January sales, well before COVID19 was even a thought! It was so coordinated, it worked so well.
Do you have any other projects planned?
We have a few faded garden toys that we’ve been thinking on freshen up for a while. A Wendy house, a mini coupe toddler car, a sand/water table… I’ve seen a few ones done up to a very high standard, I’d be just happy if we could do some bits and bobs.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
I’m Maria-Eugenia, but my friend and family all know me as Geni. I’m Spanish and I’m married to a Scot. We’ve been living in the beautiful city of Stirling since my oldest was 9 months old. We have 3 boys, Scott 6, Pablo 3 and Carlos, the birthday boy, just turned 1.
How are you finding being housebound with kids so far?
I was fine to start with. We even decided to take the kids out of school a week before the schools closed. We were very motivated the first two weeks, exercising in front of the TV, loads of school works and different activities. Then, Scott, my oldest, started to lose interest and it was a fight for every minute we tried to do any school related work, which affected my mood, and the whole family’s day. I felt like a failure because I couldn’t sit down with him. My 3 y.o, would get no attention as the baby needs watching as he’s in that pre walking stage. So, me and my husband, decided we were going to ditch school work. He reads every night before bed, and we try do some numbers when we can. There are still days that are very hard, but most have little precious moments to remember forever. We just need to take each day as it comes. The most important thing for us is that we all enjoy being with each other, happy and safe.
I often forget to ask my children to do tasks around the house. Sometimes, they will willingly do them. Many, they won’t. We just need to remember that they are capable to do many things, like make their own beds, or get the washing out/in… Cook simple meals… They love feeling useful! And they learn in the process too.
