Hannah, from Bourne End, Buckinghamshire, sent in this recycled art idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

After I accidentally destroyed our wooden chopping board by putting it in the dishwasher I decided that rather than throw it out I would put it to good use and make something for us to keep forever. I asked my dad to glue it back together and sand it down for me to use as a canvas to create a painting of our handprints as a way to remember our time together in lockdown during the Covid-19 pandemic.

You can of course use an old sheet of wood you may have lying around or alternatively you can buy cheap canvases online.

We drew round our handprints on sticky backed plastic and stuck them onto the board. You can use other materials to do this but sticky backed plastic is great as it will stop the paint bleeding underneath so that you get a nice crisp outline when you remove them from the board after painting.

We then sprayed the board with spray paint. We used a grey coloured primer because it adds colour at the same time as forming a great base for the coloured paints you will add on top.

Once the spray paint is dry we got various colours of paint and a few paintbrushes and splattered the whole thing generously. We used acrylic paint because it gives a nice raised, textured effect, but any paint will do.

Once the paint had dried thoroughly we carefully peeled away the sticky backed plastic to reveal the bare wood underneath, and our handprint painting was complete!

Everything went really well with this creation, however it is very messy- the paint goes everywhere! Don’t make the same we did and do it in the garage wearing clothes that you quite like! We had to beat a hasty retreat into the garden part way through to finish it off and my hubby was not best pleased with the mess we made in the garage!

Do you have any other projects planned?

We have been doing some glass painting and also I am making a planter out of an old metal compost caddy to grow some herbs in.

How are you finding being housebound so far?

Being housebound with my son hasn’t been as bad has I thought it would be, but I have found working at the same time as homeschooling very challenging at times! On the plus side, we have found lots of fun and craft things to do with our afternoons to keep us busy!

Do you have any tips for other parents?

To keep my son focussed on his school work while I am working during the day we have been doing fun activities in the afternoon- providing he keeps to his side of the deal by doing his work! We have done a bit of gardening, glass painting, baking, cooking and also movies with popcorn! We live near the River Thames so going to feed to ducks and ducklings when the weather is nice has also been lovely!

Has this website and community helped you?

This website is great and I will definitely be visiting it more often to get some inspiration for our next project!
