Gemma, who lives in Canada (originally from the UK) made this marble run game with her family. Here’s how they did it…

What did you do?

We used a Ukulele box, but any box would work. We used large craft sticks and hot glued them inside the box at different levels. My son made a ramp some turns using a toilet roll. We also used a toilet roll cut in half for a tunnel near the finish line.

My son was the engineer of the project and made the tunnel and sections to go in and out. He didn’t want to make it too easy!

What is next?

We are always crafting and putting something together. We have some old toothbrushes that still light up. We didn’t want to throw them out so my son wants to make them into fireflies!

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I’m a stay at home mum with two children. Alfie who is 8 years old and Emily who is 3 years old. I usually take in other kids when my son is in school. However during lockdown it has only been the three of us. My husband works from home but we don’t see him much.

I’m from the U.K. originally but we live in Canada. Came to Nova Scotia when my son was 15 months old as my parents live here. My daughter is the only Canadian in our family. I’m actually a preschool teacher by trade and I’m very crafty and love doing activities with the kids.

How have you found being houesbound?

We have been keeping very busy during lockdown so I guess it hasn’t been too hard for us. Amongst crafts and doing science experiments and some home schooling we’ve been lucky enough to get out for walks. We have a woods close by so we often go on scavenger hunts and nature trails.

Do you have any tips to share with other parents?

I guess I’m lucky that my kids are into crafts as much of their mama. I think what works for us is having a little bit of a schedule each day. We always do some work sheets and don’t spend an extreme amount of time doing schoolwork but we are doing other activities that are helping with maths like baking. We are reading and playing games that help with learning. The crafts are an extra to keep us busy!

Any final comments?

I find these pages during lockdown really helpful and we have used some ideas for inspiration. I love seeing everyone’s ideas it has been lots of fun getting ideas.
