Chantal, from England, shows us how to make edible paint. Let’s take a look…
What did you do?
This activity is easy and super quick to set up and most importantly really tasty!
We used:
- Tuff tray
- Natural yogurt with a drop of various food colouring
- Celery sticks
- Carrots
- Coconut shells as our ‘paint pots’ from the fresh coconuts we had last week
- Apples
- Old picture frame
- A4 white plain paper
Technically all you have to do is make the ‘edible paint’. To do this we used plain natural yogurt and added 2-3 drops of different food colouring in to three different bowls. We ended up choosing pink, blue and yellow. However you can obviously choose whichever colour you like! We then used some carrots and celery sticks to replicate as our ‘paint brushes’. As well as two small apples, cut in half, as stamps.
The activity allowed us to successfully explore mark making, textures, colours and of course various tastes! If you like messy play, this activity is for you!
Also in all honesty, the old picture frame and A4 pieces of paper didn’t really work out as they were quite quickly discarded and proved to be boring and just unnecessary. Using the fruit, vegetables and yogurt to mark make with straight on to the tuff spot/tray was much more fun!
Do you have any other projects planned?
I have one too many ideas, daily, so I guess the next play invitation will be a surprise! I can say though that it will most likely be messy!
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
Hi!
So, my name is Chantal and I am a first time mama to my little boy, T, who is 14 months old. We’re enjoying learning through (bilingual – German and English) play every single day, especially in our garden!
Personally, I absolutely love creating new play ideas and activities. I quite like to use resin, wooden toys and natural resources in the majority of these!

How are you finding being housebound so far?
Truthfully, I work in Care and don’t always have a day off. Having said that, I spend most mornings and afternoons with my little boy and having been housebound lately has been ok. Nothing more, nothing less. Of course there are times where I find it so hard, frustrating and sometimes upsetting because we haven’t been to certain outings and making those kind of experiences. However it has also made me appreciate our garden and home so much more. I think I’ve become more creative being housebound, than if I hadn’t been. Definitely learnt how to make a lot from a little!
Do you have any tips for other parents?
Firstly, breathe. Don’t ever underestimate your ability, worth or strength when raising your child(ren) and this while being housebound. Remind yourself of how you got through that difficult day, how much fun you had this day, how tomorrow is a better day!
Definitely make use of the things you have at home – don’t worry about not having all the latest ‘trending’ toys – make some, use something else, be creative! Get the kids involved in a game, household tasks, play invitations, anything. Most of all, be proud of yourself and your child(ren). Love endlessly and take each day as it comes!
Has this website and community helped you?
The concept. Plain and simple. The idea behind the Housebound with Kids website is nothing but brilliant! The interaction, posts and creativity is fantastic!
