Sam, from Canada and living in Dubai, sent in this great counting idea. Let’s take a look at it…

What did you do?

I painted a giraffe onto toilet roll and wrote numbers on cardboard. Then you can slide the giraffe up and down for counting, or make it addition/subtraction!

Materials you need: Recycled cardboard and a toilet paper roll.

It doesn’t work with more than 2 children at a time, it’s better as a one on one activity to focus on their individual math progression.

Do you have any other projects planned?

I’m in the works of making a cardboard abacus that will be used for making patterns! I can’t wait to share it!

Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…

My name is Sam, I’m from Canada, currently teaching in Dubai at a British curriculum school for 2-4 year olds. I love to make my own activities and teach the importance of recycling!

How are you finding being housebound so far?

As a teacher doing zoom classes for the last 5 months (our schools have still not reopened) I’m finding it very difficult to come up with new ideas every day to keep 3 year olds engaged on the screen!

Do you have any tips for other parents?

Use Instagram and Pinterest to your advantage! There are so many creative people out there with so many amazing ideas, if you put in the effort, you can find so many hands-on activities to keep the little ones busy every day. Try to limit screen time even though it’s the easiest go to at the moment! Also playdough – make lots and lots of playdough!

Has this website and community helped you?

Seeing all the talented people out there sharing their original ideas has helped me in my daily planning!
