Amy, from Bristol, sent in this great idea. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
For quite a while now my daughter has been fascinated by shadows. She often asks me why they have no colour. Iv been meaning to show her how you could create a colourful shadow for a while but also wanted to tie it in to some fun play so she could explore it. Since she has been really into imaginative play at the moment too I decided to combine the two plays and create her these butterfly wings! They made for fantastic play! First lots of questions and talk about light and shadows. She asked why her shadow kept moving from in front of her to behind her so we explored positional language in relation to where she was stood and where the sun was. Then she noticed the symmetry in the wings so we talked about patterns for a while too. Finally she went off on an adventure running free (or should I say flying free) being a butterfly. Some fantastic imaginative play, flapping her wings, speeding along in a variety of ways and creating magic as she went!
Making the wings was a simple process but it did take a little while cutting the shapes out of the cardboard. I found a safety knife worked best!
Do you have any other projects planned?
I always have so many craft projects on my list of things to do. I might make an alternative the the butterfly wings whilst shes still interested. I also have some sensory bottles for my other daughter in mind.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
My name is Amy, I’m from Bristol and I have two gorgeous girls. One is almost 4 and the other is 7 months old. My Instagram is @bambinomummy
How are you finding being housebound so far?
Being housebound with kids has been challenging at times. Not having the freedom to take them out and about and be able to spend time with others has been hard.
Do you have any tips for other parents?
My tip would be to go easy on yourself! It’s a hard situation at the moment that is affecting everyone in so many ways. Tomorrow is a new day!
Has being part of our community helped you?
Iv just recently discovered the housebound with kids community. It looks like such a great support system and wealth of ideas!
