In this digital age it can be so difficult to keep our children away from the screens and to interact in other ways. Tam from England found a great way to get his children aged 7 and 11 both with autism away from the screen and have great time exploring some sensory. Let’s see how they got on….
Describe activity:
Set out trays (I also used some upturned frisbees as trays) and paddling pools with various sensory/tactile items from around your house/garden. I used a rough floor mat, marbles, grass, pebbles/stones, crazy soap, water, shells, sand, tactile bath/water toys, a mesh bag, plastic jewels, squishy fidget toys like koosh balls. I also used a sprinkle paddling pool and a water pat mat. I laid mine out in a circle in the garden, so the boys could go around repeatedly.
It worked well having the messy item (crazy soap) just before a paddling pool so they could wash off feet before moving to the next texture. Later they enjoyed playing everywhere with the crazy soap on their feet!
What’s your next project idea:
I would repeat the activity another day with different items/textures in the trail. You could use dried rice, pasta, flour, aqua beads, feathers, cotton wool, bottle tops, leaves etc.
How are you finding being housebound with kids so far?
It’s tricky trying to keep finding activities to motivate the boys away from screens!
