Tonya, from Michigan, sent in this great ABC builders idea. Let’s take a look at it…
What did you do?
We have been working on letters and their sounds so much, but I always love making it hands on. The other day I cut out some long straight lines, short straight lines, big curves, and small curves out of paper and laminated them. My little guy used our letter cards to build letters out of the lines and curves.
This helps little ones who are starting to learn how to write letters. It guides them to where short lines versus long lines should be and where to use curvy lines.
I love this activity, because it allows kiddos to use their hands while learning. Kids learn so much through exploring, way more than they do through workbooks.
Do you have any other projects planned?
I also create printable resources for home learning. My current project is working on a Fall Unit Study that will incorporate science, math, and literacy activities for pre-k through 2nd grade.
Tell the Housebound With Kids community a bit about yourself…
Hi! I’m Tonya and I am the owner, creator, and digital illustrator for Raising Dinos! I am married to my best friend, James and we have two crazy, wild, and lovable boys of our own who are 6 and 10. Both our kids were adopted from the foster care system in the summer of 2019. We have our challenges, but we try to have fun with what we do at home, which includes our homeschool life. Nature walks, playing outside, art activities, and our annual trip to the ocean are a few of our favorite things.
I love the freedom of homeschooling and being able to do hands on learning with my kids. The excitement my kids have when we learn about something they are interested in makes me so happy as a mom. This is why I create resources. It gives me a chance as a homeschool mom to create things I know my kids will love while hopefully helping out other homeschool families too! @raising_dinos
Do you have any tips for other parents?
Try to have fun with this time you have with your little ones. We love getting outside and going for walks or bike rides. Behaviors are always better when we are outside and moving.
What are your family’s favourite board game(s)/card game(s)?
Our favorite board games are simple, but fun! We love Sorry and Monopoly! Another favorite of ours is Stratego!
What are your children’s favourite books?
Our favorite books are “Nature Anatomy” and “Ocean Anatomy” by Julia Rothman. We also love Eric Carle books! If you are looking for a read aloud for kids 6 and up, we have been loving “The Burgess Seashore Book for Children”.
What toys would you recommend to other parents?
At our house we try to encourage creative/sensory play. Our favorites are open ended art supplies, magnet tiles, kinetic sand, legos, and dinosaurs. My boys also love Beyblades!
Has this website and community helped you?
I love this website, because it gives so many ways to create and explore with our little ones!
